Smuggs
Went for quite the hike today. Aaron and I snowshoed up into the notch, then quite a ways up into the "Back Bowls" - the woods through Smugglers Notch. Had a really good time, though I'm exhausted. More exercise than I've gotten in a while :-) We were carrying our downhill skis and boots on our back (framepacks are a wonderful thing) so we could ski back down. After we got to the top (point 3 in the map) we turned around and skied back down. Only took about 45 minutes to get all the way back down, after taking a few hours of snowshoing to get up. Map of the route (go to aerial view)
The skiing was a little rough - it's backcountry, which in Vermont means lots of trees. I was using my backup pair of skis, and they're too long for woods skiing, so it was a little intense in spots. First pic is Aaron as we headed up the road (closed in winter) through the notch. Second photo is after we switched to skis for the way down.
We got back to the car at 3:48pm, and had enough time to get down to Smuggler's Sterling Lift to take one run at the ski resort. It was well past when they stopped checking tickets, so we got a free run.
